Discovering Lumpini Park
Lumpini Park is one of Bangkok’s most iconic green spaces, offering a tranquil escape from the city’s bustling streets.
Located in the heart of the capital, the park spans over 140 acres and is named after the birthplace of the Buddha in Nepal.
Lumpini Park is a hub for both locals and tourists, providing a blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and cultural experiences.
The Usual Atmosphere at Lumpini Park
On any given day, Lumpini Park is a haven for relaxation and leisure.
It’s shaded pathways and serene lakes make it perfect for jogging, cycling, or a peaceful stroll.
You can rent paddle boats on the lake, enjoy picnics under the trees, or simply soak in the park’s calming atmosphere.
The park is also home to monitor lizards, which are fascinating to spot as they roam freely.
Morning and evening hours often see locals practicing tai chi or aerobics, while weekends might feature small cultural events or outdoor markets.
A Secret Christmas Market: The Red Cross Fair
During my recent walk through Bangkok, I stumbled upon a secret Christmas market in Lumpini Park, officially known as the Red Cross Fair.
I discovered it by chance while exploring the city after writing a review of Life @ Sathorn 10.
Though its official name doesn’t reference Christmas, the festive vibe, decorations, and market atmosphere gave it the feel of a Christmas market.
If I hadn’t researched its official name, I would still refer to it as a Christmas market.
The event features a concert showcasing traditional Thai music and numerous stands offering affordable and delicious local Thai food.
Festival or Market?
You could describe this event as a festival, as it centers around a celebratory atmosphere, with food stands scattered across the area.
The concert zone, with ample seating near the stage, adds to the festival-like ambiance.
At the same time, the many eating locations give it the character of a bustling market.
Essentially, it’s a mix of a traditional Thai market and a concert space, similar to the festival markets you can find on various occasions throughout Thailand.
It’s timing around Christmas and its festive nature make it feel like a Christmas market to me.
Conclusion
Lumpini Park is a beloved gem in Bangkok, offering both locals and tourists a peaceful retreat from the city’s chaos.
Its usual charm lies in its scenic beauty and recreational options, but the Red Cross Fair adds a unique festive touch to the park during the holiday season.
Visitors can enjoy this mix of a Thai festival and Christmas market.
